What makes a good gamertag
- Readable in a kill feed. Short names with clear letters are easier to spot and call out.
- Easy to type on a controller, without lots of symbols or swapped letters.
- Not tied to your real identity, so you stay private in public lobbies.
Length limits
Xbox gamertags are up to 12 characters (Xbox adds a number suffix if the name is taken). PlayStation online IDs are 3–16 characters. Roblox usernames are 3–20 characters with at most one underscore. Steam profile names are flexible, but your account name is not shown publicly.
Gamertag rules by platform
- Xbox: up to 12 characters for the name (Xbox may add a number suffix if it’s taken).
- PlayStation (PSN online ID): 3 to 16 characters; letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores.
- Steam: the profile name can be changed any time; the account name you log in with can’t.
- Roblox: 3 to 20 characters, one underscore at most.
What makes a good gamertag
Short names are easier to call out in voice chat. Avoid letters that look alike (l and I, O and 0) if you want friends to find you, and check that the name doesn’t read as something rude when the words run together.
Changing your gamertag later
Xbox gives you one free gamertag change, then charges for later ones. PlayStation lets you change your online ID, with the first change free and a fee after that, and some older games may not support the change. Pick something you’ll still like after a few years of playing.

Questions people ask
Is it OK to use numbers in a gamertag?
Yes, but avoid your birth year; it tells strangers your age. Pick numbers that mean something only to you.
