What makes a good business name

    • Easy to say and spell. If people can’t spell it after hearing it once, they won’t find you online.
    • Room to grow. “Main Street Cupcakes” is hard to stretch into catering; “Main Street Bakehouse” isn’t.
    • Short enough for a logo and a handle. Aim for one to three words.
    • Distinctive. Invented or combined words (like Brightbake) are easier to trademark than plain descriptions.

Check a name before you use it

    1. Search engines and maps: is a business nearby already using it?
    2. Trademarks: search the USPTO database (or your country’s trademark office) for the name in your industry.
    3. Domain: see whether the .com or your country’s domain is free with any domain registrar.
    4. Social handles: check Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. Our Instagram username generator suggests variations if the exact name is taken.
    5. Business registration: your state or country’s business registry tells you whether the legal name is available.

Generated names are ideas, not legal advice. A name can fit all the rules and still be taken; checking is up to you.

    Naming styles that work

    • Descriptive: says what you do (Main Street Bakehouse). Easy to understand, harder to trademark.
    • Compound: two words joined (Brightbake). Memorable and often available as a domain.
    • Invented: made-up words. Easy to protect, but you’ll need to explain them.

    Make it yours

Use the generated names as a starting point. Combine two you like, swap a word for one about your town or values, and say the result out loud to a friend. If they can spell it after hearing it once, it passes the most important test.

    Questions people ask

Are these business names free to use?

The ideas are free, but that doesn’t mean the name is available. Always check trademarks, registrations and domains before using a name for a business.
