Discord username rules
- 2 to 32 characters.
- Lowercase letters a–z, numbers, underscores and periods.
- No two periods in a row.
- Each username is unique across Discord.
Your display name is separate: it can use capitals, spaces and emoji, and doesn’t have to be unique. Many people pick a simple username and a more creative display name. Server nicknames can be different again in each server.
Ideas that work well on Discord
Short names are easier for friends to type when adding you. Underscores and periods help separate words (pixel_fox, moon.drift). If your favorite name is taken, try adding a related word rather than a long number.

Username vs display name
Your username is how people add you as a friend. Your display name is what people see in chats. Many people keep a simple, easy-to-type username and put the creative name in their display name.
If your name is taken
Swap a letter for a similar word (wolf → lupo), add a short word (the, its, real) or a period between words. Avoid long strings of numbers; they’re hard for friends to type.
Keeping your account safe
Don’t put your real name, age, school or location in a Discord username. Turn on two-factor authentication, and remember that changing your username doesn’t change your user ID, so people you’ve blocked stay blocked.
Names here are made in your browser, so nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
